  1. Have you seen this game? It's called Madworld, and the purpose is to murder people. There is a sportscaster in the background giving commentary on your murdering technique.

    It's the most fucked up thing I think I have ever seen in videogames. It gives both reason and purpose for demagogic rabblerousers like Jack Thomson to rouse rabble and shit.

  3. Seems to be treading the same path taken by Suda51 in No More Heroes (i.e. another mature Wii title), except this game's idea of style doesn't seem to work nearly as well. The dark humor gimmick of "look, they're spilling five thousand gallons of blood per second" wore off really quickly for me in NMH, and the violence here is bound to follow suit. Doesn't look like it's got very much depth aside from the gore novelty, but then this is just a preliminary trailer for the game.

    I'll pass. However, I admit that if a friend bags this sometime down the road, I'll no doubt check it out and be amused for a while.

  5. Gore as a selling point has always repulsed me. Gore is never wholly necessary, and while if used both sparingly as well as tastefully, it can be effective (a la the chestburster scene from Alien) it is more often used as a device for 'hey, look at how much this person is being hurt'. It's pure exploitation and shock value.

    It's a large part of two disturbing trends in our society that worry me greatly. In film, there is a large amount of films over the past 7 or 8 years (and for the foreseeable future) in the genre that I've grown to refer to as 'torture porn'. Saw, Hostel, The Hills Have Eyes, the list goes on and on. People are paying money to go watch other people be tortured and killed in the worst ways possible, and what's worse is that so many people are enjoying it.

    In games, we've also had a shifting trend towards a different form of torture porn. Games like No More Heroes, Manhunt, and Grand Theft Auto that are all about doing the most despicable things imaginable, and often in the messiest way possible. I don't like playing as the bad guy. I'm all for spilling a little covenant blood in Halo, because it is clearly layed out that they are the aggressors, they are wrong, and what I am doing is both in self-defence, and in the defence of my people. But in Grand Theft Auto, I suddenly find myself being forced by the gameplay to shoot people who have never done me any harm simply to watch them squirm. Frankly, it repulses me.

    I have always been very anti-censorship, and I am by no means against these types of games and films from being made. I do, however, wish that I could live in a world wherein 'the people' as a whole was responsible enough and mature enough to not enjoy such things.

  7. Amen brother. MadWorld looks to be the most nonsensical game I've seen yet in the video game industry. I mean it's gore sensationalism for fuck sakes, what in the hell is the point of this game? This isn't brilliant game design, this is a cheap ploy to drive people to waste hours on slaughtering other opponents. Where's the pacing? The rewards? I'm not interested in just taking your enemies out in the most vile, vulgar and graphically violent ways possible. It just seems like pure depravation to me. I actually play games to be enlightened AND entertained. This shit is just tasteless.....

    • Devil May Cry
    • Resident Evil 1
    • Resident Evil 2
    • Resident Evil 4
    • Viewtiful Joe
    • Okami

    Because Platinum Games is the company founded by Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya.

    All else is irrelevant. All you need to know is that the game is probably going to be innovative, feature very strong and consistent art direction, and be overly long and very difficult.

    I am probably going to buy it, because Kamiya is a god.

  33. See, now I'm all for making a statement, and art in video games, and all that stuff, but frankly, I can't stand the thought of SCMRPG (Super Columbine Massacre Role-Playing Game). I find the guy's justification of it's creation similar to Paul Verhoevan (Verhoeven?) saying that his movies 'parodied violence'. Swift is one of my favorite authors, and he always managed to get a message across without doing anything tasteless, anything that could get him in trouble if he didn't try to protect it by calling it art, or anything purely sensational. Sensationalism is what's really bringing games down in the public eye right now, and its what allows creeps like Thompson to fester and grow until they actually start trying to do something.

  51. I feel like I just stumbled onto a forum full of outraged soccer moms (take it easy, its a joke). If a little blood is going to keep you from enjoying a game, that is your prerogative. I just find it a little laughable that this game is being blasted for its "lack of innovation" months before its release. Granted, I tend to find brainless, mindless games welcome, especially after a day of work when I'm not exactly in the mood to read an entire novelized dream sequence (in reference to Lost Odyssey). If said game lets me violate people in sickening ways, then so be it. That is not to say I don't enjoy games that provide an enriching and enlightening experience, because I actually do prefer them. I just personally wish I lived in a world where people would learn to take more things that are obviously tongue-in-cheek with a grain of salt.

  53. I'm all for tongue-in-cheek as long as its tasteful. I'm all for blood as long as its not just blood for blood's sake. If I want a mindless game after a hard days work, I'm far more likely to play Lego Star Wars or Ratchet and Clank or something along those lines than I am to partake in something like Madworld.

    A lot of what I've said probably sounds like I really dislike anyone who would play this game. I have no problem with people playing it, and I'm all for freedom of speech and expression. I just don't really like the fact that so much of our global society would play Madworld (or NMH, or any number of other gutsploitation games) before anything else. Maybe I'm just a complete prick, but it seems very banal to me.

I'm just voicing my opinion, where I find it a little weird that people are already writing this game off as 'non-innovative tasteless garbage' and nothing else before even getting a chance to play it. I understand that kind of argument for a game like Manhunt, which is complete, and total torture porn both in presentation and visual style (and maybe I bring a bit of hypocrisy into this on my part by saying that, but thats an example of pure and simple depravity in game form). I just don't see what the big deal is with this or No More Heroes in comparison to a game where you realistically suffocate people with plastic bags, as oppose to severing someone in half in an overly dramatic, Sin City-stylized way. I hope it doesn't seem like I'm attacking anyone (because I have a tendency of being a sarcastic prick online lately), so...

  61. I don't think anybody wrote this game off on terms of innovation, or lack thereof. On the contrary, Rahul is clearly interested in it because he thinks it'll bring a little innovation.

    No, I'm not playing it merely because the sole object is to murder people. I don't care what kinds of new murdering innovations are made available by this game, or how enlightened and visionary the development team is. The idea of murder as sport is disgusting, and that anyone would want to situate themselves in this role, even virtually, is beyond my comprehension.

    I'm much more comfortable murdering soulless, innocent plantlife. I can't tell you how many broods of Pikmin I've killed off.

  83. i like gory games. theyre funny ( ie saw 3 when the girl had her hands in the thingy where its kind of like how if you put your finger in the thing that straws go into on plastic cup tops... HILLARIOUS!!!) and otherwise i might gouge some people's eyes out with a dull spoon, then cheese grade their feet off and blend it into a drink mixed with their own feces before cauterizing their wound shut, making them walk into a room with a big bag of nachos and that drink until they get sooo thirsty from eating the salty nachos that they have to drink it.

    GameSpot has an interesting tidbit in their preview of MadWorld, noting that Vagrant Story, Tactics Ogre and FF12 designer Yasumi Matsuno is lending a hand on the game's scenarios. He was tapped by his friend Atsushi Inaba, who has a bit of experience himself thanks to his work on Viewtiful Joe, Okami and God Hand.

    Make of this information what you will, but that's quite a bit of experience right there. Consider our expectations raised. "

  99. If Matsuno's input really does results in a good (great?) game, I still probably won't play it. The violence makes me uncomfortable. It is odd how the older I get, the more skittish I am about these sorts of things. I just hope it allows him to be on more projects and do more games, hopefully I'll be able to play and enjoy some of them.

  103. Some interesting tidbits about Matsuno's role in the game (published under the trivia section on our MadWorld game page):

    Yasumi Matsuno, whose whereabouts had been unknown for some time after mysteriously dropping out of the development of Final Fantasy XII, resurfaced to write the story for MadWorld. He was reportedly tapped by producer and personal friend Atsushi Inaba "to build the game’s world and script from the ground up" and breathe life into a game whose genre (action) typically has little or no depth in storytelling. In writing MadWorld, Matsuno came upon a paradox: the rejection of violence in general society and the acceptance (and indeed embrace) of it by the game's characters. Finally, Matsuno has stressed the unexpected depth of the game: "it may be a little difficult to catch everything in the story by only playing the game once. With each replay you can understand the true meaning of each character's dialogue more and more."
