  1. Holy shit! Cause apparently Im faster than the Haven cough cough, heres the report:

    From 1up:

We reported earlier today that Square Enix would be holding a conference to announce a new Dragon Quest game, but no one quite expected the bomb shell they dropped: Dragon Quest IX, the next sequel in the officially numbered series and not a spin-off, will be arriving on the Nintendo DS.

Rumors suggested the anticipation surrounding Wii and its promise of lower development costs would make Dragon Quest an easy lure -- but apparently rumor mongers were wrong about the platform. Does this mean the Dragon Quest series has abandoned its console roots?

Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Starry Sky for the Nintendo DS is being developed by RPG powerhouse Level-5 (known for Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud, and White Knight Story), and will feature 3D graphics and network play. Four players will be able to team up, and the battles are apparently action-based, unlike previous games in the series. Creator of Dragon Quest, Yuji Horii, said at the event that working on the new game brings back the same feelings he had when working on the very first game in the series, twenty years ago. Big words indeed for a very surprising announcement. Horii admitted that he recognizes the limitations of the DS but is doing his best to create a groundbreaking adventure on the platform. He wanted to make clear that DQIX is "not a spinoff or a side story; it's a true part of the series." He says he is shooting to have it ready in 2007.

Well, it's official, ladies and gents. Dragon Quest IX is hitting the Nintendo DS in Japan next year.

Square Enix stresses that Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Skies is a continuation of the main series, and not a spin-off title. Not much is known about gameplay, except that there will be two modes: single-player and multi-player. Multi-player gets you playing through the DS's Wi-Fi network with up to three other DQ fanatics.

Now you may be asking how 4-player DQ will work... Well it's still a mystery, but popular belief is it's going to work a lot like Final Fantasy XI -- active battles with characters in your party controlling their own movement. Preliminary screens suggest your party members can be in totally different areas of the map at once, doing their own stuff or helping you out in battles. Concerning battles, enemies will be visible on the field, so there won't be random battles like past DQ installments. Also, a neat addition is that any character equipment changes will be immediately seen on bodies.

Just like Dragon Quest VIII, Level 5 will be handling development. Yuji Horii, the father of Dragon Quest will lead the entire project, with Kouichi Sugiyama creating the soundtrack. Akira Toriyama will be in charge of character designs

    BEST FUCKING NEWS EVER

And a question for discussion... Would we be seeing the same news article if the PS3 wasn't $600?

  11. DQIX is on DS because it is the biggest platform in Japan. There are 13+ million DS's available in the country as opposed to 12.5 million PS2s.

It would never have been PS3. PS2 or DS. DS won.

  12. Well, I posted something yesterday on the Haven that described Dragon Quest IX as "traditional". Clearly, I was ignorant of a lot of the details outlined in this topic. Active battle system = love. If there's anything that's tedious about the DQ games, it's the battle system at times. I'll likely enjoy the new twist on the battle system, and the multiplayer feature sounds really promising.
I wonder if we'll be able to design our own characters, or if mutliple players will take control of different party members (similar to Seiken Densetsu 3's multiplater system (edit: lol "multiplater"; I obviously meant multiplayer, though)). I guess the latter makes more sense, though it'd be nice to see the former as well, heh.

Also, yes, it's interesting that the DS was chosen, of all systems. Understandable, though, considering its popularity. I guess that's another interesting twist, pushing the game away from traditional Dragon Quests and also making me more interested in how it's going to turn out.
