An Action-Adventure game for Super NES by Nintendo in the Zelda series
On a dark and stormy night, Link is awakened by a telepathic message from the Princess Zelda, imprisoned in her own castle by the evil wizard Agahnim, usurper of the throne of the Kingdom of Hyrule. Disobeying his uncle's orders, Link heads off into the night to help rescue Zelda. Once safe, Zelda reveals to Link Agahnim's sinister plan: using the Triforce, Agahnim will liberate the dark wizard Ganon from his exile in the Dark World. And so begins the journey. Link sets out to find the Master Sword, the only weapon powerful enough to stop Agahnim, protect the Triforce, and save the Kingdom of Hyrule.
Religious undertones present in the original Japanese version were censored for North America. The original subtitle was changed from Triforce of the Gods, while the evil priest Agahnim became the evil wizard Agahnim, sent to the Earth by the cosmos instead of the gods.

Nintendo released a book to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Zelda series titled 'Hyrule Historia'. The book contains artwork, designs, and information. It also contains the hotly debated timeline of the series - except this time it's 100% official. In the early 2000s Nintendo of America released this timeline - complete with a warning that this was only their interpretation and the actual timeline remains open to debate. Translator Dan Owsen wanted to upload a draft but Nintendo Japan requested them to cancel the plan - as despite having an official plan in Japan they want to keep the speculation and theories running for the fandom.
The book is currently available in Japanese only however a fan translation has begun. The above image is a translated version of the official timeline provided in the book.

I’ve never actually finished it...I almost feel like there’s still no game more difficult than it. Every time I try to play it I end up getting 'Game Over' a few too many times and giving up partway through. Certainly after playing the original Zelda for the first time, I didn’t ever think that I wanted to make a game like that...that sense of exploration of the world itself [in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past] was really where I latched on to the series.
