Hiroshi Minagawa

A Game Director and Art Director for Square Enix and (formerly) Art Director and Game Designer for Quest and Square

Hiroshi Minagawa

Game designer Hiroshi Minagawa is credited as "Nigoro" in his earliest game titles. He began work in the game industry on Quest 1991 sidescolling shooter for the PC Magical Chase, where he served as art director. It was his first project with Yasumi Matsuno, Hitoshi Sakimoto, and Masaharu Iwata, all of whom he collaborated with again while serving as art director for Quest's strategy RPGs Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre (and much later on Final Fantasy XII).

Along with Matsuno, Minagawa traversed the line to Square in 1995 and later served as art director on Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story with the core team from Quest. He was a key member of Square Enix Division 4, and after working as visual designer and character textile supervisor, he became Final Fantasy XII's co-director with Hiroyuki Itou after the departure of Matsuno from the project.

Together with Taku Murata, Minagawa delivered a post-mortem of Final Fantasy XII at the 2007 Game Developers Conference. He also participated in an interview found on the extra disc included with the collector's edition.

Tactics Ogre returning on PSP

After a lengthy hiatus, the Tactics Ogre series is returning with a sequel entitled Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fate. It will be a remake of the original Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together from the Super NES period with the return of series architect Yasumi Matsuno along with his other peers, Hiroshi Minagawa, Akihiko Yoshida, Tsubasa Masao, Hitoshi Sakimoto, and Masaharu Iwata. This particular installment will feature a revision of the original game's story, along with some new characters and scenarios being written by Matsuno himself. Minagawa will take directorial role while Yoshida and Masao are designing the characters and Sakimoto and Iwata are doing the music. Read on

Final Fantasy XII delay and Matsuno mystery finally explained

Although Yasumi Matsuno, revered visionary responsible for such exceptional works of art as Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, remains listed as the man credited for "original concept/scenario/supervision" on Final Fantasy XII, he has apparently been very ill for a long time, which would explain 1up's earlier comments about him not being at work for a month.
