Welcome to Videogam.in, a site about videogames. Read more about this site or else pay me for the door repair charge.

This week, a leaked video of a U.S. military attack in Iraq that killed 12 civilians, including two Reuters journalists, generated much debate in the media. But most agreed on one thing: the footage looked like a video game.

An NPR piece, "Virtual War," discusses violence in videogames and the impact games have had on desensitizing those whose job it is to kill human beings.

  1. When I first heard about this video I avoided watching it. I still refuse to watch it. We (the US) are in a war. Sick stuff like this happens. Did people think accidents never happen? That only the bad guys die? Does anyone stop and think that the bad guys are actually people? I'm not happy about it one bit, but what did people expect to happen? It's why war needs to be avoided if it can at all cost. But don't act surprised when people end up dead.

I took a self defense class towards the end of college for kicks. One day a girl asked what he thought about carrying a knife for self defense. His reply: You bring a knife to a fight, EVERYONE gets cut.

  3. @Nels Right. Collateral damage will happen in any war, whether it's a war between nations or ideals (War on Drugs, Terror, etc.). It's just the nature of the beast.

However, this piece has nothing to do with what you're talking about. It's about the affect of videogames on soldiers that every day are making tough decisions to kill, like those in the leaked videos.

...Which were CRAZY, by the way. It gave me a lot of respect for those people who have to make tough decisions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and every other war zone -- decisions that are easier made in a videogame.

That's what the piece is about. Are videogames like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 making the decision to kill easier?

  5. @Matt Thanks for calling me on not actually reading the article I don't know if they're making it easier, but it would be pretty silly to think they are making it harder. And I'm sure the military has picked up on this. Which is why they use videogames for training and recruiting purposes.
