US game developer salary declines in face of recession

According to Game Developer Research, the analysis arm of Game Developer magazine and Gamasutra, the average American mainstream videogame industry salary in 2009 was $75,573, a decline of more than 4% from 2008's figure of $79,000. While the 2008 figure was a record high, development studios looked to cut costs in the midst of a recession. Programmers are the highest paid talent in the industry next to high-end businesspeople. Artists, game designers, and producers followed.12

  1. FUCK this is the wost time to report videogame news. I guess this is kind of interesting, but I doubt I'd be reporting it if there wasn't a media blackout impending E3.

  3. I guess it is all ways a concern when salaries drop, but that is still a heckuva good salary. I would be interested in seeing what the standard error of that mean is. Maybe the growth of the industry has created more entry level position with lower pay rates thus pulling down the average.
