Shigeru Miyamoto in no rush to retire
BlogAs reported by Kotaku Shigeru Miyamoto (Nintendo's creator of Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and Donkey Kong among others) has advised he's in no rush to retire at all.
Well, I am one of the company workers and the company has to retire me some time. So from that perspective, yes I may have to retire from Nintendo some day. But when I look around and see how aged cartoonists continue to work on their manga and how movie directors create new movies all the time, I understand that they would never retire. And by the same token, I guess I will still be making games somehow. The only question is whether the younger people will be willing to work with me at that far point in the future.
Kotaku points to famous anime director/writer Hayao Miyazaki who I instantly thought of while reading this. Both men are getting old and are still creating media. Miyazaki has pointed out numerous times it is becoming more and more difficult as he finds his staff with a wider age gap when trying to explain animation in key scenes. Who will these men be passing on the baton to when they eventually do retire? Will Nintendo and/or Studio Ghibli (the anime studio Miyazaki co-founded and works for) be able to carry on without these two auteurs?
Miyamoto has Eiji Aonuma I guess though Yoshifumi Kondo from Studio Ghibli unfortunately passed away in 1998. Hope now rests in Hiromasa Yonebayashi to produce something special in his upcoming Ghibli film The Borrower Arrietty (based on The Borrowers).
Still there are those that critised The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and some also were not fond of the recent DS titles.
I think people need to accept when these greats choose to move on and see who else can entertain them in a different way. Still if they want to keep going then I won't say no!
I'm also aware that there's a fair amount of anime discussion here, but it's my blog damn it!
