It’s a tough market. DS is the most successful platform ever, but all my kids’ friends at school have a DS with an R4. They have 100 games for no money. So yes, the market has collapsed for the DS and Wii...We had a lot of product, and the average quality of a game on DS and Wii is very, very bad. So in the mind of the consumer today, to buy a DS or Wii game is to buy a game that isn’t very good.

  1. That was a very interesting article. I liked his attitude about dealing with the huge issue that is piracy. Instead of trying to stop them, change business models to accommodate them better. However I don't like his proposed alternative where games are cheaper but have only about 5 hours of content. Then they nickle and dime you for the rest. It still seems like the is a battle that the VG industry can't do much about. How do you fight entitlement issue?

  3. @Matt I do think there is an issue with this standardization of prices sometime. All PS3 games must be $60, etc. However on the used market, games can become much more affordable. I don't mean GameStop used, I mean eBay used. If a more flexible and dynamic pricing strategy was used for new games, I think that would be a good first step.

    It just seems completely foreign to me how people can rationalize "I think it's worth $10 new right now because it is crap, but since I have to pay $50 right now for it, I'm just going to pirate it right now for free." If it was such a piece of crap, why does it have to be pirated right now? If it's such a piece of crap, why can't you wait for it to be the price you think it's actually worth? If you don't think it's worth the disc it's printed on, why pirate it all?

    I submit a common, if hypothetical situation: Because it's a sub-par product that I, the consumer, believe is below the value the market has established, and because this is a market-driven economy (ie, Capitalism), and because I know of the means to get it at a price that I think is fair (ie, free via piracy), I will therefore take it for free.

    If any single one of those three scenarios were not true -- ie it's a good product, the price is fair, or there were no means to pirate it -- then no rational, fair person would steal anything, ever. But rationality, take note, is scenario four.

    As it is, Nintendo, the RIAA, etc. are trying to bypass element one (making a good product [NSMBW and 95% of all music albums released]) and punish those who aren't rational. What's the goddamn point of doing all that?

  5. @Matt I agree. The world of anime that I love so much is reversed. Piracy is rampant to the point that it is one of the big factors in why the industry is falling over and struggling to breathe.

    Fans download the content, then don't buy it. Why? Fans are younger, people get used to not paying for content and some of the fans have gotten older and are now at university and can't afford it.

    The games industry no doubt is suffering too but nowhere near as badly. Games are far more mainstream and therefore churn out much larger amounts of shit. (Though a lot of anime these days is designed for a niche audience that I am not part of and it's fairly poor too.)

    We've come a long way, things are far far easier to pirate these days, especially on PC. The new generation of fans has started getting into these forms of media already being able to obtain them illegally for free. What you and I might consider quality enough to purchase at the right price these newer fans might not ever purchase even if they do like it.

    Still, I'm buying a lot less stuff generally these days. Yes I have less money than this time last year but at the same time I can count on one hand the number of titles coming out in the next year or so that I'm actually looking forward to playing.

    It probably doesn't help that EB games has a new blockbuster console title at $110 (AUD). That's particuarly over-priced, and I refuse to pay that much for a game unless it's of the highest quality that I will play for many hours and revisit many times.

    My Wii is sitting in the loungeroom gathering dust as it awaits some form of quality game to come out. I haven't turned it on in quite some time.

  6. @Matt If a game a is good enough to illegally download then it clearly has positive dollar value to the pirate. If it were really worth $0 dollars to them then they wouldn't download it at all. Unless of course they are pirating for the sake of pirating (which many people do). That probably qualifies them for some sort of mild mental disorder.

    However I concede to your point. Though, it does mean that most pirates are greedy, impatient, and/or have series entitlement issues.

  7. @Alex yeah, what the hell happened to anime?! It's gotten so ridiculously niche now, almost to the point where I'm embarrassed to admit that I even watched it religiously in the past. ALMOST. I don't think I'll ever get to that point as long as images of Shinichiro Watanabe's masterpieces remain in memory, but the type of stuff they're churning out these days is pushing me to the edge.

    And it's definitely a consequence of mass piracy, in some ways.

  8. @Kanji I still really enjoy anime. Though I don't bother keeping up with what is new and hip. I operate on about a 5 year lag it seems for what is popular and good. This is a surprisingly good system.

    Also Netflix and Hulu are the two best things happening to anime right now. There are so many good/decent shows on Hulu. Netflix has just about everything you could want that's been brought over the the US.

  9. @Kanji Japan is producing lots of moe anime these to appeal to the hardcore otaku demographic in Japan where they know they can make money. So the content these days is largely crap. The United States is having major problems with dubbing, the dubbing companies just aren't being approched as much to dub anime anymore. The whole world economy thing hasn't helped, and as previously mentioned neither has piracy.

    Just because a lot of the content is crap now doesn't mean all is lost. There's still a few gems coming in and the moe trend may be on the decline. Hopefully.

    Indeed. The fact that they're thinking of trying to construct a money per hour gameplay ratio is very worrisome. It's suppressing creativity.

  11. @Pugz People want too many games. Plain and simple. The consumer isn't thinking very hard about what it is they actually want out of a product. Or worse yet, they don't actually want anything out of it and video games are just a masturbatory time sink for them. Too much emphasis is put on getting games because they are considered "the best" and not enough emphasis put on getting it because it is what you enjoy.

    A friend and I fell into this trap recently. We both bought Uncharted 2 around Christmas time because it was supposed to be really good and it was on sale. While visiting him I played through most of the game at his house. I came back 4 months later and beat it. He watched and never played the game. My copy sat on my shelf at home the whole time still in it's factory seal. I plan on gifting my copy to a good friend of mine whenever he gets a PS3 (he needs to buy a car first). I knew going into the game I probably wasn't going to enjoy it, but it's reputation was so good I thought I needed to play it. I was wrong.

    The only good that came out of this outing was a better resolve to stick to the game I know I enjoy and to stop worrying about games that get 10/10 that I think look like junk.

  12. @Nels yeah, definitely. I think this is a theme more common to recent years as well, the idea that a 10/10 release for someone could be a total waste of time in someone else's eyes. The new generation of gamers that have pooled up with us make things so different now, and it's tough to distill the opinions that are most compatible with our own. The times are changin', y'know? and it's definitely for the better, but I'm having more trouble adjusting to the new climate of the videogame scene than usual.

    I mean, personally in the past I've experienced a lot of games whose reputation was absolutely reflective of their quality and crossover appeal. I didn't even care about Kojima until 2008 when my good friend bought a clearance copy of Metal Gear Solid 3 for me and told me I had to play the thing, a masterpiece in his eyes. Wasn't until 3 months or so later that I finally touched it, but MAN I was wrong to hold out on a game (and franchise) like that for all these years.

    Fast forward to 2010 and the only game I'm really looking forward to with all my heart, soul, and mind is The Last Guardian, and it's the only one I know I'm buying as soon as I get the chance. Having room mates that enjoy a lot of the recent PS3/Xbox/PC titles I get to 'watch' all kinds of new games, but there are very few that I feel intrigued in myself.

  14. Oh yea I feel ya, i was like that a year and a half ago but now I stick with game designers (much like I stick to directors in films) over IPs, it's worked out quite well for me so far.
