Super Mario Galaxy 2: a great example of how a sequel can be better than the original

BlogMario never seems to cease to amaze people. His games are usually highly regarded by many as the best for any system he is on. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is no exception. I'm just gonna come out and say it: this game is fucking great! I would like to make one thing clear before I go on, this is not a review; this is just my opinion. So don't expect me to go into too much detail about the controls or any of that shit. I just wanted to express my feelings toward the game and why I think its great. Mario has always been very dear to my heart. I have always enjoyed playing his games and always looking forward to his next adventure. As much as I loved the original Super Mario Galaxy, I have to say that I love SMG2 even more. This game is a must play for any Wii owner. Its controls, graphics, and level designs are all superb. Even if you haven't played the first one, SMB2 doesn't give anything about the first game away, so first-timers won't have to worry about playing "catch up" ito be able to enjoy this game. In fact this game doesn't even feel like sequel at all(until you get to the end), but rather a continuation of the first game. All the moves are executed in the exact same way with the controller as with the original, so there's no new techiques for you to learn. It does seem to be a little bit easier and more forgiving than the original as well.

So why do I think SMG2 so awesome, well its mainly three reasons: 1. more chances to play as Luigi. 2. re-using old music from previos Mario games. 3. No fucking cosmic clone races!

Let me explain it more throughly: (1) This is one of the few games that I actually enjoy playing as Luigi more than Mario. In most Mario games Luigi can run faster, jump higher, but also harder to stop. This never seemed to make a difference to me until I played the galaxy games. I just always feel that I'm in more control with Luigi and seem to be able to do more crazy moves than I could with Mario. (2) Super Mario World is still my favorite Mario game of all time, and it was great to hear so much of the music re-used in the levels of SMG2. The only one I can think of at the moment is the theme used in the ghost levels, thats was from the ghost houses in SBW. I remember the game also had the music from the slide level in Super Mario 64. (3) Finally and still my most favorite reason, they got rid of those stupid-ass cosmic clone races. These things were fucking horrible, and what I feel kind of ruined the first game. The cosmic Mario races weren't really that bad, but cosmic Luigi..... fuck me. I still haven't been able to beat SMG for this very reason, in fact I've only been able to beat one of his races. Not only was he faster than cosmic Mario, he would take the same shortcuts as you would, so if you fucked up even once, you might as well as just kill yourself and start over. Eliminating these bullshit races was the best thing they could have done for SMG2.

My favorite area of the game was the Throwback Galaxy. This was a level back in SM64 and it is the exact same as it was back then. I didn't recognize it at first, as its been so long since I played the 64 game, but when I did I was absolutely delighted. It was like reuniting with an old friend I hadn't seen in years. I think putting that level in the game for the long-time fans, as an easter egg, was a nice touch.

So in conclusion, SMB2 is great game that I believe can appeal to hard-core fans and new-comers alike. If you are interested in a review of the game, here is one that sums up pretty much my feelings about Super Mario Galaxy 2!

I mean, hooray!, but I don't know if I would go anywhere near as far as to say they ruined the game. Super mario galaxy was such a great game as a whole; the races were merely a minor blemish.

PS. Thanks for the impressions; I can't wait to play it!

  2. I've played a few hours of SMG2 at a friend's house. From a design standpoint it shocked me how much fine tuning could be done over its predecessor. My only complaint is that I haven't come across any equivalent to story book time with Rosalina.

We hear a lot of complaints that Nintendo keep beating its key franchises into the ground. As long as Nintendo does the beating with games of this caliber, no one should be complaining.

  3. @Nels I believe the complaint is that they are doing so with generic, sub-par titles in remote genres (Mario Sports Mix, for example). Nobody is complaining about the major iterations that Miyamoto has his hands in.
