Attention, nerds: God hates you

Westboro Baptist Church, the infamous church/hate group from Topeka, Kansas, is making an addition to its notorious "God Hates..." picket agenda. In addition to "Fags", "Jews", and "America", WBC is now asserting that "God Hates Nerds". The congregation will be in San Diego next week to rain down 45 minutes of eternal damnation upon the idolatrous worship of Spider-Man and Green Lantern.1

The congregation's July 22 schedule of events is listed as follows:

If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.

  1. Before I continue, I will point out I'm reasonably agnostic but am open to anyone joining/believing and relgion's doctrine they choose to. That said I'm happy to argue against things like this specific quote that seem silly to me.

That said, I do not 'worship' anything. I don't worship Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima, Hayao Miyazaki or anyone/thing else despite the fact that they are awesome.

By pointing to Batman and Superman as idols, most of films, television and novels therefore are in the same boat. Do people that read books and respect authors or characters fit in the same category?

I don't think it's impossible to believe in God and read Spider-Man comics at the same time.

Edit: let's hope this discussion doesn't turn into some form of religious flame war!

I don't see God pulling "this nation" out of any messes.

Maybe I'm just blind to "his ways".

I've a friend who is a Catholic Deacon, and we often joke about people like these. Religion is a tool of both the righteous and the wicked, as history has proven time and time again.

  3. "If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible..."

Perhaps it is because the things that occur in comic books are more believable than the shit that is in the Bible; just a thought.
