Is Nintendo reconsidering another Metroid?

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime offered a few solemn, contemplative words regarding the retail performance of Metroid: Other M. Is the future of the Metroid series in question?

"We believe that it could be, should be a million unit title," he told Kotaku in an interview1 on November 12. "We're not going to get there, not through the holiday. And we are doing a lot of thinking as to why."

When the answer came that the game might have effectively killed one of gaming's greatest heroines, Reggie shrugged it off. "I'm not going to sit here and criticize a style of the game, but have I read the same feedback that said, broadly, that the portrayal of Samus felt different than how the player in the past had internalized the character? I've heard and read the same feedback. Do I think it's warranted or not? I'm not quite sure yet... I don't yet believe that that is the driving factor to the performance of the game."

So, Reggie, does Metroid have a future? "I certainly hope so," he said. "I'm a passionate fan of Samus and the Metroid series."

That Nintendo is contemplative of the future of Metroid may be an omen for fans. The last time Nintendo was so introspective may have been following the disappointing sales of Super Metroid, when an 8-year blackout befell upon the series.

  1. I don't see why they wouldn't; Metroid is one of Nintendo's flagship titles. Besides its not like it was the first one to ever have a bad game included in a good series. cough Zelda II cough

  2. @Son_Gara Nobody is accusing Other M of being a bad game. Misguided, maybe; unprofitable, definitely, which is much worse for a series' future than one bad installment, of which Other M probably isn't anyway.

  3. @Matt But isn't that usually the main factor on why a game doesn't sell so well, because it sucks?
