Nintendo eShop launches June 6

Months after the system's initial release, Nintendo's digital content service for 3DS finally launches next week in North America and Japan. The lineup in North America includes a few classic Game Boy titles that are straight ports (no added content or 3-D capabilities) like Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Radar Mission. There is also a line of "3-D Classics" that are remastered titles with features that make use of 3DS capabilities like 3-D and the gyroscope. However, only one launch title is planned: Excitebike, though it will be free until July 71. According to an in-depth Game|Life article2, Excitebike 3D will include a bevy of "unexpected functionality", including:

  • A vastly improved track editor that uses both 3DS screens for easy editing and lets you save 32 of your creations.
  • A new use of the 3-D slider: When you adjusted, it doesn't just change the depth of the 3-D effect. It actually changes the camera angle of the game. When you dial down toward the 2-D setting, the camera zooms in and shows a closer view of the biker. When you make the 3-D more intense, the camera pulls back to show a wide-angle shot of the stadium’s bleachers far off in the distance.

Also free for users who are updating their systems is Pokédex 3D, "an essential guide for any Pokémon fan" that will include over 150 Pokémon from Black and White games. Pokédex 3D will be free forever3.

Nintendo has set a rock-bottom price point of $1.99 for eShop games. Of the three Game Boy games available, Super Mario Land will cost $3.99, and Alleyway and Radar Mission will cost $2.99. Although the lowest price for a game is $1.99, you can only add funds to your "wallet" in amounts of $5, $10, $20 and $50.

The Japanese eShop will receive different Virtual Console games, along with a couple of new 3DSWare titles. Games included are Mega Man in Dr. Wily's Revenge, Kirby's Dream Land, Baseball, Phantasm, Downtown Special Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou!, and Super Mario Land, as well as original titles Mystery P.I Kieta Film and 3D Block Kuzushi. Japan will also receive a stereoscopic 3D remake of Xevious in addition to the aforementioned Excitebike.4

  2. @Alex Excellent I wonder if it'll be the original or the DX version that was released for GBC.

  3. @Matt hopefully DX. It had an extra dungeon! It'd actually be even cooler if they released it with some way to switch between to please both camps (assuming there even are 2 camps).
