We have not designed Nintendo 3DS and Wii U to be mere improved versions of their predecessors... We have designed them so that they can realize what has been impossible.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata on the future of the 3DS and Wii U in a financial results briefing Q&A¹, where Iwata also discusses making the "killer app" for both consoles (what Brain Age and Wii Sports were to DS and Wii, respectively), and on focusing too much on "hardcore" players and not enough on "hobby" players.
